The USP is a double-action semi-automatic pistol from the German company Heckler & Koch GmbH (H&K), which appeared in 1993 to replace the P7 pistol. The Universal Selbstlade Pistole, or universal semi-automatic pistol is chambered for different calibers and available in many versions.

This pistol benefits from an entirely original design, that is to say that it is not about an old modernized model. It was originally designed to fire the .40 S&W and then gave rise to a version with a lower power firing the more conventional 9mm Parabellum, a reverse evolution to what was generally done on competing models. The two ammunition having relatively similar dimensions, the 9 mm version differs only by the barrel and the dimensions of the magazine.

In September 1989, the Heckler & Koch firm decided to design a new family of pistols, mainly meeting the requirements of the American market. In 1991, the first prototypes of the USP were subjected to the rigorous tests of the OHWS (Offensive Handgun Weapon System) program, a program commissioned by the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and which resulted in the tactical version derived from the 'USP: The HK Mk.23. This pistol is chambered in .45 ACP only and equipped with adjustable sights and a specific barrel that allows you to attach a silencer (USP SD).
